Laminate flooring is a printed image under a thin wear layer, and that layer scratches. A vacuum with a stiff, spinning bristle brush will dull and mark it over time, and a wet vacuum or steam mop can swell the joints and ruin the planks outright.
So the two things that matter most are a brush roll you can switch off (or a soft roller) and keeping water away. This guide covers how to judge that, and the six vacuums that are genuinely safe on laminate in a small apartment.

The two rules for laminate
- Rule 1: no stiff bristle brush. A spinning bristle roll scuffs the wear layer. Look for a brush-roll shutoff switch, or a soft-roller head designed for hard floors.
- Rule 2: no water. Laminate is a wood-composite core. Water in the joints swells the planks and lifts the edges. Avoid steam mops and wet vacuums unless the manufacturer explicitly rates them for laminate.
The reviews
1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away — best overall

Shark Navigator Lift-Away
Powerful suction, a brush-roll shutoff for hard floors, and a HEPA filter. The lift-away pod makes stairs and under-furniture easy.
Check Price on Amazon →The Navigator is the pick for most apartments because it does both jobs: switch the brush roll off and it is safe on laminate, switch it on and it handles a rug. The lift-away pod detaches so you can carry it up stairs or into a bathroom without dragging the whole vacuum.
Who it is not for: anyone who wants a cordless vacuum, or who has very little storage space.
2. Shark Rocket — best value for small spaces

Shark Rocket
A lightweight stick vacuum under 9 lb with a brush-roll shutoff. Easy to store in a small apartment.
Check Price on Amazon →If storage is tight, the Rocket is the answer. It is light enough to carry one-handed, converts to a handheld for stairs and sofas, and its brush-roll shutoff keeps it safe on laminate. It gives up some suction to the Navigator, but for a small apartment it is plenty.
3. Bissell PowerEdge — best budget hard-floor vacuum

Bissell PowerEdge
A V-shaped soft-bristle design built specifically for hard floors, so it sweeps debris into the suction path without scratching.
Check Price on Amazon →The PowerEdge is designed for exactly this job. Its V-shape and soft bristles funnel debris into the middle instead of scattering it, and there is no stiff brush roll to mark the floor. It is corded and hard-floor-only, but at this price it is the best dedicated laminate vacuum.
4. Dyson V8 — best cordless

Dyson V8
Cordless convenience with a brush-roll shutoff and strong suction. The easiest vacuum to actually use every day.
Check Price on Amazon →If you want to vacuum without thinking about it, a cordless is the way. The V8 has a brush-roll shutoff for hard floors and enough suction for daily touch-ups. Battery life is the trade-off — around 40 minutes on low, less on high.
5. Miele Classic C1 — best canister

Miele Classic C1
A quiet, powerful canister with a hard-floor head and excellent filtration. Built to last.
Check Price on Amazon →A canister is easier on your wrist than an upright and the Miele is the best of them. Its hard-floor head is gentle on laminate, it is quiet, and its filtration is excellent for allergy sufferers. It costs more and takes more storage, but it will outlast most of the others.
6. Bissell CrossWave — best if you want to vacuum and wash

Bissell CrossWave
Vacuums and washes hard floors in one pass with a soft roller. Check your laminate is rated for it before use.
Check Price on Amazon →The CrossWave vacuums and washes in one pass, which is convenient on sealed hard floors. But laminate is the one floor type to be careful with — only use it if your laminate is explicitly rated for wet cleaning, and never let water pool in the joints.
Caring for laminate
- Vacuum dry first, then mop with a barely-damp microfibre mop — never a soaking wet one.
- Wipe up spills immediately. Standing water is what swells the joints.
- Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners and anything with wax, which leaves a dull film.
- Empty the vacuum bin regularly — grit in a full bin gets dragged across the floor.
