A refrigerator door that will not close properly is more than an annoyance. Every minute it stands open, the compressor runs harder, the electricity bill climbs, and the food warms. The good news is that the cause is almost always one of six things, and most are cheap to fix.

Work through them in order, from the simplest to the most involved.

Quick answer
  1. Check 1: something blocking the door — a shelf, a container, a bag.
  2. Check 2: the fridge is not level and tilts forward.
  3. Check 3: a worn or dirty door gasket.
  4. Check 4: a loose or broken hinge.
  5. Check 5: an overloaded door shelf.
  6. Check 6: a bent door or frame.

1. An obstruction

Start with the obvious. A container pushed too far forward, a bag caught in the seal, or a shelf that has slipped can all stop the door closing. Open the door, look at the seal all the way around, and remove anything in the way.

  • Tall items on the top shelf hitting the door.
  • A bag or packaging caught in the gasket.
  • A shelf that has slipped forward.
  • A drawer not pushed fully in.
  • Ice buildup on the freezer door seal.

2. The fridge is not level

If the fridge tilts forward, the door will not stay closed. This is the second most common cause and the easiest to fix. Check with a spirit level and raise the front feet until the fridge tilts slightly backward.

A quarter inch is enough

You do not need much backward tilt — about a quarter inch over the depth of the fridge. Too much and the door will not stay open when you want it to.

3. A worn gasket

The door gasket is a rubber seal that runs around the door. Over time it hardens, cracks or gets coated in sticky residue, and stops sealing. Test it with the dollar-bill trick: close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak at that spot.

4. A loose hinge

If the door sags or rubs, the hinge is loose or worn. Tighten the hinge screws first. If the door still sags, the hinge may be bent or the hinge pin worn, and the hinge needs replacing.

  • Tighten the screws on the hinge plate.
  • Check for play by lifting the door slightly.
  • Look for a bent hinge or a worn pin.
  • Replace the hinge if tightening does not fix it.
  • Support the door while working — it is heavy.

5–6. Other causes

If none of the above fixes it, the cause is less common. An overloaded door shelf can pull the door out of alignment. A bent door or a damaged frame usually means the fridge took a knock, and may need a technician.

  • Overloaded door shelf — move heavy items to the main shelves.
  • Bent door — usually from a knock; may need replacement.
  • Damaged frame — a technician job.
  • Warped cabinet — rare, but possible in a hot kitchen.
  • Wrong hinge side — if the door was reversed incorrectly.
Bottom line

A fridge door that will not close is usually an obstruction, an unlevel fridge or a worn gasket. Check in that order, clean or replace the gasket, and level the fridge so it tilts slightly back. Most fixes cost nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Door gaskets

A new gasket restores the seal and cuts the power bill.

Why won't my refrigerator door close all the way?
The most common causes are an obstruction, an unlevel fridge tilting forward, or a worn door gasket. Check in that order.
How do I test a refrigerator door gasket?
Close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak there. Clean, soften or replace the gasket.
Can I fix a refrigerator door gasket myself?
Yes. Most gaskets pull off and push on, or are held by a few screws. Replacement gaskets cost $20 to $50 and take about 20 minutes to fit.
Why does my fridge door swing open by itself?
The fridge is tilting forward. Raise the front feet so it tilts slightly backward, and the door will close on its own.
How much does a new refrigerator door gasket cost?
Usually $20 to $50 depending on the model. It is one of the cheapest appliance repairs and saves a lot of energy.
